California AB802, passed back in 2015, requires owner of all “covered buildings” over 50,000 square feet across the state to benchmark their energy use annually using EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager Tool. This is the largest benchmarking ordinance of its kind, covering over 36,000 buildings across the state.

The first deadline for submission is June 1, 2018.

The definition of a “covered building” is more nuanced than other benchmark requirements. You can see detailed definitions and the text of the law by visiting the California Energy Commission website.
